St. Isidore of Seville
Reconciliation—also referred to as Confession—is the Sacrament where you meet the Risen Jesus, who gave the Apostles—the first priests—the power to forgive sins in His name (Jn. 20:23). First we are to ask the Holy Spirit to come into our hearts to give us knowledge of our sins and courage to bring them to our Lord (use the Examination of Conscience below to help get you started). He loves you, and deeply desires for you to come to him in humility so that he can free you of your burden. Reconciliation gives you the joy and consolation of God’s love; it strengthens your relationship with Jesus Christ and his Church.
Come Holy Spirit, into my soul. Enlighten my mind that I may know the sins I ought to confess, and grant me your grace to confess them fully, humbly, and with a contrite heart. Help me to firmly resolve not to commit them again. O Blessed Virgin, Mother of my Redeemer, intercede for me through the Passion of Your Son, that I may obtain the grace to make a good confession. All you blessed Angels and Saints of God, pray for me, a sinner, that I may repent from my sins, and that my heart may be forever united with yours in eternal love. Amen.
1. You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind
Have I neglected to pray every day? Have I made anything more important than God in my life? Have I engaged in superstitious practices such as astrology, fortune-telling, spells, magic, Ouija boards, or the occult? Have I sought vain praise, failing to acknowledge God as the source of my gifts and talents? Have I rejected or neglected my faith or not bothered to find out more about it? Have I hidden or denied my faith in front of others?
2. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain
Have I deliberately given in to distractions in prayer? Have I abused or shown disrespect for any holy place, object or person? Have I blasphemed by using holy names, such as Jesus Christ, as swear words? Have I broken a solemn oath or vow? Have I ever received the Eucharist without being properly prepared (for instance, without fasting for an hour or without going to confession if I am aware of having committed a serious sin)? Have I ever deliberately left out a serious sin in confession?
3. Remember to keep holy the Lord’s Day
Have I willingly missed Mass on a Sunday or on a Holy Day of Obligation without a serious reason? Have I prayed and paid attention during Mass to the best of my ability? Have I done my part to arrive at Mass on time? Have I engaged in work or activities on Sundays or Holy Days which have hindered the worship of God, works of charity or proper recreation? Do I encourage my family and friends to keep holy the Lord’s day?
4. Honor your Father and your Mother
Have I refused respect or ridiculed my parents? Have I disobeyed my parents? Have I neglected my parents if they are in need? Have I refused respect or ridiculed those who have religious authority in God’s family? Have I disobeyed teachers, coaches, or any other lawful authority? Have I made it hard for my siblings or others in my care to respect me by treating them badly? Have I broken any just laws by drinking while underage or using drugs?
5. You shall not kill
Have I murdered or co-operated in murder? Have I been violent or taken part in fights? Have I intentionally harmed my own body? Have I neglected the poor or needy? Have I quarreled, fought or hated anyone? Have I been a bully? Have I gossiped? Have I given in to anger? Have I encouraged others to do wrong in any way? Have I made it easier for others to sin? Have I neglected my duty to bring others closer to God and encourage them in a life of virtue? Have I been drunk?
6. You shall not commit adultery
Have I committed adultery? Have I had sex outside of marriage? Have I engaged in masturbation? Have I engaged in lustful kissing or other impure acts with another? Have I spoken about sex in an obscene way through language or jokes?
7. You shall not steal
Have I stolen anything, including goods, information, money or software? Have I failed to pay my taxes and debts to others? Have I failed to return borrowed property or make restitution for thefts? Have I misused or intentionally damaged the property of another? Have I stolen information by cheating on homework or a test? Have I wasted the time God has given me?
8. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor
Have I lied? Have I discussed others’ faults and failings unnecessarily? Have I lied about or exaggerated the fault of another? Have I damaged the good name (reputation) of another? Have I made rash judgments about another?
9. You shall not desire your neighbor’s wife
Have I desired someone else’s spouse? Have I looked at or thought of others as sexual objects? Have I willingly engaged in impure thoughts? Have I taken or looked at any impure pictures? Have I read immodest literature or written impure things? Have I used any other kind of pornography? Have I engaged in impure conversations or jokes? Have I made it easier for other people to sin by the way I speak, act, or dress?
10. You shall not desire your neighbor’s goods
Have I been jealous of another’s possessions, talents, or looks? Have I disliked another because of their achievements? Have I been greedy? Have I failed to thank God for his gifts to me?

Act of Contrition
My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy.
OR
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins because of Thy just punishments, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, Who art all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to sin no more and to avoid the near occasion of sin.
Prayer After Confession
Merciful Lord, with a pure heart I thank you for taking away my sins. Let your Holy Spirit guide my life so that my soul may bear the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trust fullness, gentleness, and self-control. Renew my desire to be your faithful friend and servant, increase my loving dependence on you, and grant me that joy and peace of heart which comes from doing your holy will. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
