Becoming Catholic

The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) is an apprenticeship in living the Christian life in the Catholic tradition. Candidates experience a gradual process of conversion and spiritual formation. Over the course of an academic year, it is a time of prayer, study, reflection, faith sharing, ongoing discernment, and participation in the life of the parish. The rite involves four elements: Word/Scripture, Worship/Liturgy, Community, and Service.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

• Persons not baptized

• Persons baptized Christians and interested in the Catholic Faith

• Persons baptized Catholic but not Confirmed

• Persons raised Catholic who seek to learn more about the faith

• Catholics who wish to serve on the team and/or sponsor a candidate

We serve BGSU students, faculty, administrators, staff and coaches along with year-round Bowling Green community members and parishioners.

Weekly formation sessions ordinarily take place 6:30-8:30pm on Wednesday evenings in the Romero Room of the Parish Center, from Mid-September through April. Some weeks, participants will be asked to attend an alternate event, such as a parish-sponsored activity.

WHAT WILL I EXPERIENCE?

The OCIA apprenticeship includes formation sessions that involve prayer and reflection on Scripture, Salvation History, Jesus Christ, the Sacraments, the Mass and Liturgy, Saints, Theology of the Body (Human Sexuality), Catholic Moral Teaching, and more. In addition, candidates are involved in parish activities that include liturgy, social events, and service opportunities.

WHO WILL HELP ME?

Each OCIA candidate is supported by a Catholic mentor ("sponsor") who attends sessions and events and walks the journey with you. You can choose your own sponsor who is a practicing Catholic, or we can provide one for you. There are many students and year-round parishioners who are happy to serve as sponsors. 

IS THIS LIKE TAKING A COURSE?

No, OCIA is a liturgy--an ongoing faith formation experience that includes Catechesis (teaching of the faith), spiritual growth, and participation in the life of the parish. While various readings and resources will be recommended, there are no requirements like one might have when taking a formal course.

IS THERE ANY OBLIGATION?

Feeling unsure is natural-after all, joining a faith community is a significant step. It is always a good idea to speak with your sponsor to understand the source of your doubt. If you remain uncertain and feel that now is not the right time to become Catholic, you are always free to leave the process-there is no pressure. If you step away and later decide to return, you are always welcome. Through your association with us, we hope that you gain a deeper understanding of the Catholic faith and build your relationship with Jesus Christ.
